Day of Service & Operation Gratitude
We were very proud to have the opportunity to participate in today’s Day of Service, a national event when Americans perform community service in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. A few years ago, well after the MLK Day was established, Congress proclaimed it to be a day of action and service, instead of simply a day off. President-elect Barack Obama further emphasized - by example - the value of using this day for community service activities.
We went to the Day of Service for Our Military at RFK Stadium in Washington, DC. For an hour, we - along with thousands of other DC-area residents and visitors for the Inauguration - packed care packages for our deployed Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen. We were able to finish nine bags of goodies for the troops and even write a thank you letter that will be sent to deployed military personnel. The event was co-sponsored, by ServeDC, Operation Gratitude, and Target.
Thank you troops and thank you volunteers who participated in a day of service!
