Thinking Like a Terrorist - Insights of a Former FBI Undercover Agent (Author: Mike German) - Book Review
Title: Thinking Like a Terrorist - Insights of a Former FBI Undercover Agent
Author: Mike German
Year: 2007
Overall Rating: 10 out of 10
It’s not easy to earn a “10 out of 10″ rating from me. This book achieves that with ease. Author Mike German combines first-hand law enforcement and counter-terrorism experience with a historical context (including post-9/11 America).
He methodically makes the case that treating terrorists like criminals is the most effective way to damage their credibility the results of their efforts. First, terrorists lose their desired legitimacy when law enforcement labels them as common criminals (even if their criminal activities were an attempt to spread terror). Second, using law enforcement tactics and techniques enables nations to develop a detailed understanding of terrorists methods, mind-set, patterns, and tactics.
He examines three case studies to illustrate the validity of his arguements and recommended tactics:
- French Army versus the Algerian National Liberation Front (aka FLN) in the 1950s
- Ku Klux Klan (KKK)
- Irish Republican Army (IRA)
Mike German’s opinions are well-supported and based on first-hand experience. He presents a strong case for using law enforcement resources and tactics against terrorists in addition to, or in some cases in substitution for, military resources and tactics. He concludes that taking the fight to terrorists in a military fashion can give terrorists exactly what they aspire to obtain - legitimacy.
Thinking Like a Terrorist is useful for those interested in counter-terrorism, especially military, law enforcement, and judicial system-related personnel. Elected officials will also find it to be useful and interesting.
